Frequently Asked Questions

How are you different from other Doctors?

Our goal at Athletics Sports Medicine and Wellness is to educate and empower our patients. Dr. Cyd Charisse Williams practices functional medicine and creates a personalized medical care plan designed for each individual. Dr. Williams looks beyond the symptoms to find the root cause of your sports injury or health concern. Traditional medicine treats symptoms, not the underlying causes.

Athletics Sports Medicine and Wellness has the privilege of seeing athletes and non athletes for injury prevention, rehabilitation, sports enhancement and injuries related to joints, muscles, skeletal, ligaments, tendons and bones (including stress fractures) that do not require surgery. Primary care sports medicine physicians are not surgeons like Orthopedist. With personalized medical care designed just for you, our goal is to give you a health span, not only a life span!

What is Functional Sports Medicine?

Sports Medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with musculoskeletal, ligament, tendon and joint injuries, and the treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. Our goal is for everyone to be physically fit and to change the way the world views sports injuries, focusing more on prevention and improving rehabilitation. Dr. Williams would like to have each athlete or non athlete understand their body and not wait for an injury or illness to occur. At Athletics Sports Medicine and Wellness we assess your biomechanics and look for muscle deficiencies that could ultimately result in an injury. Many illnesses can be prevented or detected early with the new blood tests and genetics tests available. The goal is to enhance your sports performance, help reduce the risk of injury and improve your overall health, giving you a health span, not only a life span.

What is functional medicine?

Functional Medicine is a form of medicine that focuses on the underlying cause of injuries and illnesses, not just treating the symptoms with medications.

What can I expect in an initial health consultation/office visit?

At Athletics Sports Medicine and Wellness, the initial health evaluation consists of a portion of listening to your health concerns followed by Dr. Williams giving a session of patient education, relating it to your health concerns. There will be a thorough physical assessment of how your body is functioning as a whole body, not just a single joint. Dr. Williams will develop a personalized health plan after obtaining cutting edge specialized labs, bloodwork, additional specialized medical assessments or genetics testing that address your health concerns. Your unique personalized health plan may include lifestyle and/or nutritional changes, supplementation, exercises or muscle strengthening exercises. The goal is to treat the underlying causes, not only treating the symptoms with pharmacologic agents.

What can I expect in a follow up visit?

A follow up visit consists of reviewing the results from the initial health consultation recommendations (ie. bloodwork, radiology studies, dietary changes, rehabilitation exercises, etc.). If you are following up an injury or physical ailment, there will be a progression of exercises demonstrated for you to do and continue at home.

For how long and how often do you see a patient?

45 minutes-1.5 hours depending on the patients health concerns. Our goal is to address the underlying cause of your symptoms and empower you with the information and tools to have a health span, not just a life span. Your health concerns will determine how often you will need to be seen. At a minimum we will want to do routine bloodwork and follow up every 6 months.

What are the fees associated with your services?

Dr. Williams starts with a detailed history with the New Patient Intake Forms which include your current and past health concerns and/or injuries, medications, family history, dietary review, quality of sleep and relevant medical questionnaires. Please bring the New Patient Intake Forms completed, with any past bloodwork to your initial health consultation. This allows us to create a personalized sports medicine or medical plan for you.

When it comes to developing your personalized sports medicine or medical plan, the phrase “one size fits all” does not apply. The fees associated with our health consultations are dependent on your individual health concerns and medical history. In general, initial health consultations range from 45 minutes - 2 hours. You determine your future by the value you put on your health. Our goal is to empower you to transform your life to give you a health span, not only a life span so you can reach your goals.

Please call our office at 407-341-6667 for an estimation of fees for your health consultation. Any labs or supplement recommendations are an additional fee.

What if I need rehabilitation for my injury?

Dr. Williams has worked with many athletes ranging from children, weekend warriors to professional athletes. Dr. Williams traveled with the USA Track and Field team to four World Championships as their team Physician taking care of both Olympic and Junior-Olympic caliber athletes. She treats each of her patient’s with the same care and attention. Her goal for the patient is to not only address the injury and make the specific corrections but have them competing or being active at their full potential again. In fact, she will formulate a rehabilitation program and a return-to-sport schedule to ensure maximum healing and recovery so that chances of re-injury are minimized. Recovery from any injury is important, but what is more important is how you develop the injury. When Dr. Williams determines the precise cause of your injury, she will use that information to correct any underlying problems, which is another way to minimize re-injury. Dr. Williams' experience has taught her to treat the whole athlete and integrate all modalities of care to maximize each athlete’s, recreational athlete or weekend warrior’s potential.

No, we see athletes and non athletes of all ages.
